IGCSE ART EXAM: Your 1st week

Figure drawing. It’s one of those things where you can get lost. Studying the model and drawing to your heart’s content. Nothing is like it. You can draw still life and landscapes but nothing will help you draw better than figure drawing.

For our classes, we didn’t draw a figure as normally would be done. The big changes I make is that students don’t draw the face and the model is wearing clothes. Yes, real figure drawing classes draw the human figure in its most natural form. Being that the class is for students under the age of 18 and because we are Muslims. I can’t have that in my classes.

The Teacher poses for the students with 5 minutes poses or 10 minutes drawings with a picture at the beginning. I like to assess the students while they are drawing for the 10 minutes drawing and see how they did for the 5 minutes drawing. They critique each other which will help them recognize mistakes the other student made and how to critique each other in a way that is constructive.

We used Midpoint and plumb and level alignments. A further article about how to use this technique can be found here.

I will be conducting mock exams each session. This exam will emulate a real IGCSE art exam. The students will be given tasks each week and they will need to try their best to complete the tasks during the time. In this sense, if the student is planning to take the exam, they will be prepared, and what is to be expected from them and how to manage their time. Our mock exams will be taken over the course of 4 weeks. Students will be marked at the end of the session. I will not stop the continuity of the mock exam and wait for them. If this was a real exam, the examiner wouldn’t wait for them. But luckily for them, they have chances to redeem themselves after the session end and they can try again.

For the 1st week, all of the students need to do the following:

  • Pick a topic from the list below
  • Brainstorm ideas using the topic
  • Take pictures
